Seventh

“Because I grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas – the Natural State – the outdoors were integral to my childhood. On my seventh birthday, August 7th, 2002, my dad took us on a family fishing trip to Beaver Lake. I was so excited, and helped him pack all the fishing gear into the car. Once we’d arrived he told me that the key was to be still, and to be very silent. He told me to stay this way until I felt a firm tug on the line, and that only then was I to pull back in response. I managed to do it just like he told me, and it worked! It worked seven times actually – three brown trout and four rainbow trout. Dinner that night is so memorable – eating my favorite food with my favorite people on my favorite birthday.” – Fariah Majid

Bio: I was born and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas and I am currently studying biology and Spanish at Emory University, pursuing a career in the field of biotechnology. My family is originally Bangladeshi, which might be what my choice of favorite food can be attributed to. I love to knit as a hobby, and I am very interested in issues of identity as it pertains to the development of the individual and the community.
