“Today is my brother, Omar’s, 18th birthday – today is the day he enters adulthood. Omar was diagnosed with severe autism when he was two year’s old, and our interactions differ from other sibling pairs in a variety of ways. Words don’t carry much weight in our relationship: when we spend time together, it is often in silence, watching a movie, enjoying our respective iPhones, or conducting an activity that doesn’t require much talking. But that doesn’t mean our relationship isn’t strong. Most of the time, the older sibling inspires the younger sibling, but in my case, Omar inspires me every day. He defies the expectations people have of him due to his disability, whether by exceeding in his reading abilities, or by forming true friendships. He is the personification of success because no matter how difficult something may be for him, he works hard until he overcomes the obstacles in his way, and he comes out triumphant. Today I am 300 miles away from him, but I want him to know how proud I am of the adult he has become. I want him to know that I learn from him every day, from his golden heart and pure intentions. I want him to know that even though he doesn’t say much, to me his voice is the loudest. Happy birthday Omar!” – Mashal Mirza
