“The day I turned 16, I took the first of a series of Cambridge qualifying examinations that essentially changed my life. For those who aren’t familiar with the UK school system, the IGCSE and A level exams are external exams that test you cumulatively on everything you’ve covered in high school. Studying for it was a true test of my discipline – the ultimate challenge! When it was over, I felt like so many doors opened up for me. Before that, I didn’t realize how powerful education was. I didn’t know that it would take me across continents and surround me with the amazing people I have met on my academic journey so far. Prophet Mohammad (SA) said: “Seek knowledge, even if it is in China,” and I feel like I’ve gone everywhere but China. Growing up in Saudi Arabia, there seemed to be a set path for females: you grow up, get married, and stay in the country. I look around now, and I see so much of that changing. I am proud to be one of many Arab/Muslim women that are going out into the world with the intention of truly making a difference. I graduate from Emory in May and I realize now that this is only the beginning of my academic journey. I am stepping out into the real world with an unmatched tool in my toolbox: an education.” – Hajar Al-Zerma

Bio: I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and came to Emory for undergrad. I am a double major in Biology and Economics and plan to graduate in May. Some of my favorite things to do include traveling and spending time with friends and family. The wonderful support system I surround myself with is something I am truly grateful for.
