“Life as a 6th grader was pretty simple – go to school, watch TV, play Pokémon, repeat. It didn’t get much better than that. One Wednesday afternoon when I’d just gotten home from school, my dad said he had a huge surprise for me: we were moving. That night! It turns out that my parents bought a restaurant two hours away, and we needed to relocate immediately. Since the move was so sudden, we didn’t have a chance to find a place to live. Conveniently for us, the restaurant we bought was in a motel. Room service, a maid, a swimming pool, and unlimited Butter Chicken! Sounds awesome, right? No. On many nights we would wake up to intoxicated people banging on our door, or to the police making a drug bust. I realized during this time that a different world that existed beyond the suburban neighborhood that I was raised in. 28 days we spent in that room. 28 days that showed me that not everyone in this world is given equal opportunities. 28 days that taught me the value of a dollar. 28 days that made me want to change the world. 28 days that shaped who I am today.” – Farhan Momin
